Embracing the Desire for Legs that Feel and Look Great at 50 and Beyond

Having crossed the threshold of 50 and with over a decade of experience in treating varicose veins, I have become acutely aware of the societal pressures that women over 50 faces. There is an unspoken expectation to prioritise practicality and maturity over aesthetics, particularly concerning their bodies and especially their legs. This sentiment can be pronounced when considering the cosmetic appearance of their legs. However, it is essential to challenge this narrative and recognise that wanting better-looking legs is entirely valid, regardless of age. Women often feel they shouldn’t focus on something seemingly trivial, leading them to endure the symptoms of venous insufficiency—such as swelling, throbbing, pain, and itching—that cause varicose veins. These societal expectations make women apologise for seeking treatment, causing them to suffer in silence for years.

Society's Stigma and Self-Expression

Society imposes a stigma on women over 50 who wish to maintain or enhance their physical appearance. The expectation is that, with grown-up children or after menopause, a woman’s focus should shift solely to internal matters. It’s as if there’s an expiry date on caring about one’s appearance. This belief is outdated and undermines the importance of self-expression and personal satisfaction that comes from looking and feeling one’s best. I was particularly struck by this when my young son said to me, “You are married and have children. Why should how you look matter?”

Our bodies are our own, and the desire to improve or maintain their appearance is a personal choice that should be respected. Whether through exercise, skincare, or even cosmetic procedures, taking steps to achieve better feeling and better-looking legs can significantly boost a woman’s confidence and overall well-being.

The Impact of Menopause and Varicose Veins

Menopause brings significant changes to a woman’s body, including hormonal shifts that can affect skin and vascular health. One common issue during this period is the development or worsening of varicose veins. Reduced oestrogen levels can weaken vein walls, making them more susceptible to bulging and twisting. Additionally, increased blood pressure in the veins due to hormonal changes can exacerbate this condition, leading to pain, swelling, and discomfort. Varicose veins not only affect physical health but also impact a woman’s self-esteem and confidence. They can limit clothing choices and activities, making it essential to address these concerns through appropriate medical treatments and lifestyle adjustments.

Embracing Confidence

Ultimately, confidence is key. Women over 50 have accumulated a wealth of experiences and achievements that deserve celebration. The desire to maintain our bodies’ function and appearance reflects our continued vitality and zest for life. Embracing this desire without apology sends a powerful message to ourselves, our families, and society: beauty and self-care have no expiry date!

As women over 50, we should never feel the need to apologise for wanting bodies that function and look better!
